Essay on Rights and Voluntary Euthanasia - 3662 Words

Essay Topic Euthanasia Word count 3487 This paper tries to set the issue of voluntary euthanasia in a philosophical framework by showing how some of the main philosophical theories about morality would deal with the topic. Philosophers have not discussed euthanasia as such until recently, although it is now a popular topic. What has always been discussed, however, is suicide, which raises much the same moral problems as voluntary euthanasia. The moral similarity between voluntary euthanasia and suicide enables us to make a reasonable guess about what some of the great philosophers would say about†¦show more content†¦Terminology is a problem here. Some philosophers confine the term Utilitarianism to the doctrine expounded in Mill essay of that name, whereby the good consequences are pleasure and the absence of pain. Others use the term Utilitarianism for Universal Consequentialism in general, since all versions of this view judge actions by their results - their usefulness or utility. I shall adopt this terminol ogy, which distinguishes different forms of the theory as Hedonistic (pleasure-based) Utilitarianism and Ideal Utilitarianism. I think that both the Hedonistic and the Ideal Utilitarian would argue that voluntary euthanasia is often right. The Hedonistic Utilitarian would say that situations often arise in which a persons continued existence brings more pain than pleasure both to them and to all those who are distressed by their suffering - not to speak of the resources which are being spent on keeping them alive and which would produce more happiness if used in other ways. The Ideal version of Utilitarianism is even more in tune with the views of those who advocate the possibility of death with dignity through voluntary euthanasia. For Ideal Utilitarians can counter the familiar objection to euthanasia - that no one who receives proper expert care need die in pain and distress - by saying that the good that they seek is not mere absence of pain, physical orShow MoreRelatedDo You Think That the Right to Life Entails a Right to Die Under Certain Circumstances? The Queen was greatly displeased by this, and threw him in the Tower of London to be punished. Fortunately, Sir Walter Raleigh also h ad a great deal of business sense. In 1575, he was released from the Tower of London because one of his ships captured the Spanish Madre de Dios. This ship gained a great deal of treasure for the Queen. In 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh organized colonizing expeditions to America. These expeditions ended tragically as The Lost Colony of Roanoke. Contrary to popular belief, Raleigh was such a favorite of the Queen that she refused to permit him to go off on expeditions. But you procrastinated anyway. We will write a custom essay sample on How to Write a 20 Page Research Paper in Under a Day or any similar topic only for you Order Now Shame on you. It’s due in a few hours. What are you going to do? Pick a Topic The important thing about this is to think of ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING, no matter how silly or far-fetched. It’ll make your professor go â€Å"hmm, didn’t think about that one†. You can even get your friends to help you with this one. The more the merrier. It’s best to do this on a computer, because†¦ Reorder everything Put your most obvious argument first. Then put weird off the wall stuff, regardless of importance. Put the strongest argument for your case next. Now list the incidents that will help argue for your point. Don’t know of any incidents in the news to help argue your point? That’s ok. Make up some, except keep it really really generic. When it comes time to quote the source, remember this: There are over 6 billion people in the world. There are countless newspapers and other sources that document people doing†¦ stuff. If you list incidents that are generic enough and your topic isn’t extremely weird, at least one person out there has done something notable/stupid/crazy enough to make it to the news. Also, people have sued each other over everything imaginable. Find a court case database. Your topic has SOMEHOW manifested itself in court at some point in history. I can almost guarantee it. Just make sure that the situations you come up with are physically possible. Now, list everything that could be construed to be the answer to the question â€Å"if elected, what would you do about this issue? † It’s best to keep all this in the form of an outline. Spaces Now add several lines of space under each bullet. Keep adding spaces until your text document has reached the goal size of your paper. Now print it out. Get the hell away from your computer The reason why you should do this is because everyone magically becomes ADD when they are near a computer. You can check your AIM messages later. Write Write a fiery rant in each of the spaces you alloted. Get pumped. Just don’t begin every paragraph with â€Å"I swear upon my father’s grave†¦ † Also try not to repeat yourself too much. Be very specific. Talk to your reader as though they’ve never heard of your subject before. Write at about the same size that your typed version will be. Don’t worry too much if you don’t fill in all the spaces. But if you feel strongly enough about your topic, then this really shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re like me and can’t think linearly you can skip around as much as you want. Go Back Inside Type everything. You’ll also notice more things occur to you as you type. Go ahead and throw them in in the corresponding categories. Don’t jump around too much at this point though. Maintain focus and bash out that essay as fast as possible. Although you should do this as fast as possible, be a typo nazi. Those little things really make it evident you did this at the last minute. Time for that whole â€Å"research† part Believe it or not, nothing you said was original. Remember what I said earlier about 6 billion people? Apply now. Pick each topic/case/scenario/subpoint. Anything you had to say about those has already been said by some scholar or professor or newspaper. Google it up. It won’t take long. Take a few key words from your main argument of each section and see what you get. Paraphrase their main argument or quote a few lines. Add the proper citations. Do NOT plagiarize. Formatting Print. For instance, Achilles disgusts him and didn’t participate in the war until Patroclos was killed by Hector but in the movie, Achilles is one of the faithful followers of Agamemnon. There are a lot of differences on the film and the book but still, the book â€Å"The Iliad† and the movie â€Å"Helen of Troy† both show how Troy has fallen because of one woman. The film emphasizes not on Achilles but the love between Alexandros and Helen that they don’t care what will happen in the future and the most significant to them is that they are together. Also, the movie focus on Helen’s life, on how she lost her friends, on how she became mature, how she married Menelaus who is the brother of Agamemnon, how she fell in love with Paris, and how she faced her destiny that in the end, she will lose Paris and ended up following Menelaus, according to what Cassandra foretell to her. This movie was intended to show that love can destroy a castle. Like in the movie, Cassandra tries to prevent the fall of Troy but still it happens because of Paris love Helen so much, he took her from the Achaeans. And because of this the fate of Troy has been fulfilled. This movie also intended to open the eyes of the viewers how tragic a war is. Both parties in the movie lost many soldiers, friends and families.
